A Lake Como day trip from Milan

Lake Como is worth a day from Milan, but only if you plan one day's worth of it. The lake is 46 km long; its famous towns are an hour apart by boat. Here are two itineraries that work, with real timings, and the one that does not.

Itinerary 1: the mid-lake classic (Varenna and Bellagio)

Take the 8:20 AM-ish train from Milano Centrale to Varenna-Esino (about 64 minutes, €7.40). Walk ten minutes down to the lakeside walkway and the colored houses, climb to the Castello di Vezio if you have the legs, then take the 15-minute ferry to Bellagio (€5.50, or a mid-lake day ticket at about €17.50 if you will hop more). Spend the middle of the day in Bellagio: the stepped lanes, lunch one or two streets back from the pier, the gardens of Villa Melzi. Mid-afternoon, add a ferry to Menaggio or Villa Carlotta at Tremezzo, then return to Varenna for a train back around 6 or 7 PM. Fares total roughly €30 to €35.

Itinerary 2: Como town and a boat (the easy day)

Take the Trenord train from Milano Cadorna to Como Lago (about an hour, €5.40) or a regional from Centrale to Como San Giovanni (about 40 minutes, €5.20). See the cathedral and the old town, walk the lakefront to Villa Olmo, and ride the funicular to Brunate (7 minutes, €7.20 return) for the view over the southern lake. In the afternoon, book a one-hour small-group boat tour past Villa d’Este and Cernobbio, or take the public ferry a few stops up the shore and back. You are home in Milan for dinner with almost no queueing.

The itinerary that does not work

Como town, the slow boat to Bellagio, Varenna and back in one day. The boat alone takes about two hours each way, and summer queues at the Bellagio pier run 30 to 40 minutes. The guided trips that do cover Como, Bellagio and Varenna manage it with pre-booked boarding and a fast return train, and even then their reviewers note that the stops feel short. When a tour is worth it

Book a guided day trip if it is your only day, it is July or August, or you are not comfortable with Italian stations and ferry offices. The small-group train trips cost $127 to $139 and handle every ticket; the Lugano coach day at $92 adds Switzerland. Otherwise, the do-it-yourself day is easy and costs a fraction.
